EDITOR’S PERSPECTIVE

F

ollowing the election results Prime Minister John Key sat down with John Campbell for a state-of-the-nation style interview. Mr Key said many intelligent and reassuring things such as his wish to govern for all New Zealanders; his Angela Bennett, Editor desire to try and work with other parties; what he believes Kiwis nd aspirational – their children doing well; a snippet about the intuitiveness and intelligence of the voting public; and a lengthy comment on the economy and how he will work hard to ensure NZ is a wonderful place for us all to live. "I want to leave the country in better shape than I found it," he said. He certainly seemed very sincere and humbled with the task ahead and went to some lengths to assure the public that he wanted the best possible lifestyle and standard of living for all walks of life. But a proportion of New Zealanders say they don’t believe John Key is sincere, they say they don’t trust him, they say he is a ‘wolf in sheep’s clothing’. Campbell asked John Key about the doubters. Key’s answer was concise and intuitive and delivered in his usual, casual guy-next-door Kiwi accent. He said something like, “Well, people will see what they want to see.” He said for example that many watching the recent debates would have had opposing views. I have to agree with him, sometimes after a debate, depending on the news report or the person I was speaking to, I wondered if they had been watching the same event. It’s called the Rashomon effect. The term stems from a 1950 Japanese movie directed by Akira Kurosawa. The movie is about a crime witnessed by four individuals and described in four mutually contradictory ways. It deals with the nature of truth; how the same events can be viewed in completely different ways by different people with different backgrounds, expectations and experiences. Karl G. Heider used the term to refer to the “effect of the subjectivity of perception on recollection, by which observers of an event are able to produce substantially different but equally plausible accounts of it.” In fact the Rashomon effect is operating in full force every day from the way someone describes a movie to a restaurant or a show. It’s quite true that one person’s tropical beach paradise is another person’s mosquito-ridden swamp. How one person’s hero is another’s incognito wolf.

Nikki Connors What are the three main advantages of property investment? Firstly, cash is usually the only currency that can be used for investments. However, most people don’t have cash reserves - but many have equity in their homes and a portion of that equity can be used to guarantee the deposit for an investment property. Secondly property investment is ination-proof unlike cash in the bank. And thirdly there are excellent tax savings to be made.

ikki Connors, the Principal of Propellor Property Investments, is an inspiration. She launched her business to help New Zealanders secure a passive income through conservative property investment in 2006 and has since gone from strength to strength. From humble beginnings she has built a very successful business, and enjoys driving her new Maserati, but above all she enjoys helping others in their quest for nancial security and she is committed to helping those less fortunate around the world with her generous involvement in various charities. I caught up with this dynamic businesswoman to nd out a little more about the property investment business, what drives her and what she enjoys in her leisure time… How long have you been involved in the property investment business and how did you start out? I’ve been involved in the business for well over 15 years in the UK and NZ. It began in the UK when I was promotions producer at the BBC. I began to buy and sell little ats in the back of Acton. I was no Sarah Beeny, in fact I was more of a cleaner! I used to clean them, paint them up and resell them. Then I began to keep some and use them as equity to leverage into my own businesses which I had thought about whilst I was brand strategist for some major businesses. I realised if property could change my life nancially, it could help others as well.

4 October 2, 2014 Metropol

Briey, how do you assist people achieve nancial gains through property investment? Firstly by being specic about each person’s situation, and then putting together a strategy that protects what they have built up and their day to day cashow. Then by looking at their short, medium and long term goals, drawing from a portfolio of properties that we have completed a full due diligence programme on and recommending which investment property would be most advantageous for their passive income.

Who has been your most inspiring mentor? My father was born in the East End of London and his father died, when he was 10. So my grandmother had two boys to bring up by herself at a time when businesswomen were unheard of. She co-founded a business – Burns Guitars – which she later sold for £1M in the 1960s – that’s like $20M + in today’s money. It made my father, and then I, realise there are no limitations to what you can do. My dad and I have both had successes and failures but he taught me that you learn from failure and move on, wiser. Losing everything also gives you empathy –that’s why I am so passionate now about helping others protect what they have, and helping them build from there. What drives you to succeed in such a competitive market? Understanding what it’s like to lose everything, I now want to protect the people in my life – my son (who is 26), my mother and the people I love. I also have dreams for myself such as getting away to the south of France to write my book next year! One thing I want people to realise is that building capital isn’t about greed it’s about protecting oneself and family for the future. Continued on page 7

FIVE MINUTES

Continued from page 4

WITH

five minutes Nikki Connors What is your personal philosophy on success in life? I do want to make a difference in some way in people’s lives; I want to help. There’s no fun in accumulating things in life and not having others to share and experience these things with.

MY DAD TAUGHT ME THAT YOU LEARN FROM FAILURE AND MOVE ON, WISER.

What is the best advice you can give to people thinking of investing in property? You have to treat it like a business – this means get the right nancial structure, legal structure, and the right product. It is not an emotive or ‘do it yourself’ type of investment. What are some of the pitfalls in property investment? Choosing an old property because it is cheap and then discovering it needs rewiring or repairs and it then affecting your day to day cash ow; over-extending yourself and not protecting your home. You are committed to helping others, what charities do you support? Habitat for Humanity – I’ve sponsored three groups of my clients to go and build homes for disadvantaged people in Nepal and Vietnam – it is truly a life changing experience. I also sponsor a room at Ronald McDonald House on an ongoing basis and then there’s Fight for Life, Rebuild Canterbury and the Canterbury Symphony Orchestra. You are naming rights sponsor for Canterbury Fashion & Beauty Week, how and why did that involvement come about? I was very disappointed that the original sponsor, the City Council, was no longer supporting the event. We were a city that was known for its creativity, our fashion and fashion designers. It’s all very well to focus on xing the physical side, but what about nurturing our spirits? Every day each of us battles in some way with the rebuild and repairs, I don’t want people to forget to enjoy the other side of life and enjoy living in an inspiring city.

Which is your favourite café, bar or restaurant in Canterbury? C1 for breakfast and King of Snake on a Friday night. What would you like to see in the ‘new’ Christchurch? Beautiful architecture. The block buildings going up make me despair.

What one thing does Canterbury need to ditch? The mentality that we are rebuilding for the ‘now’ and not for the future. We should be building beautiful buildings with our children and grandchildren in mind. What are you like at parties? Funnily enough, if I don’t know many people I am quite nervous – although I hide it well! What is next on your wish list? My sister has just come home from London to be with her family as she ghts cancer; and my son has been away for over six months diving in South America. So to have the entire family together for Christmas is my greatest wish and for us all to move into the New Year, healthy and happy.

On a more personal note – what is your favourite item of clothing? My Tiffany diamond cross, which was a gift. It symbolises love, longevity and although a lapsed Catholic, my spirituality. I never take it off! What music are you enjoying at present? I recently went to see Andrea Bocelli and Pink in concert and I’m going to see Katy Perry and The Rolling Stones later this year! I’ve also been in the mosh pit at venues where my son’s heavy metal band were playing… you could say I’ve got strangely eclectic taste! What one book would you suggest everyone read? Life after Life by Kate Atkinson – it is thought provoking and resonated with me. What pastimes do you enjoy most? I love to travel and if I had time I would like to improve my golf! I love going to live music and theatre – nothing is more uplifting than live performances. If you could go back and tell your teenage self something what would it be? Have less angst about your appearance and focus more on the type of person you want to be. What is your proudest achievement? The fact that I am loved by some very exceptional people around the world, people who I respect dearly – sometimes I wonder what they see in me! What were you doing the last time the thought went through your mind, “I shouldn’t be doing this”? Recently, having that last shot of bourbon in a sleazy little bar in Las Vegas at 3am on top of a long evening of revelry… The result wasn’t pleasant!

What is one thing Metropol readers would be surprised to know about you? For a short time I was an actress in a TV Soap serial and in some TV movies working alongside NZ legends like Bruno Lawrence and Billy T James. Metropol October 2, 2014 7

Join in 'moustachery' for Movember

I

t is time for the men of New Zealand to get online and begin rallying support for their upcoming hairy endeavor. Registrations have now opened for Movember 2014 and the preparations have begun for the invasion of over 15,000 moustaches. Richie McCaw, Jay Reeve, and Lorenzo Bresolin are all taking up the challenge and are calling Kiwi men to join them this year to raise funds and awareness for men's health issues. “Movember was born in a time where facial hair was rare, now it is a trend. But we're calling everyone, even the hipsters, to start clean shaven on 1 Movember. Guys, it's about making a statement that our health is important and what better way to do that than a month of moustachery,” says Robert Dunne, New Zealand Country Manager, Movember. Participating in Movember's moustachery is about more than just molding a notable mouth brow. Since 2006, the Movember campaign has raised $10,492,000 that has been put towards programmes both locally and globally that are having an everlasting impact on key men's health issues of prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health. Further information about Movember and the men's health programmes that it funds can be found online at www.nz.movember.com/report-cards.

IN THE KNOW

New things you can do on

iOS 8 I

f you have an iDevice, you probably have iOS 8 by now. Want to nd its coolest bits? Look no further! Gizmodo’s Field Guide listed 25 things iOS 8 can do that iOS 7 can’t. Here are some of the highlights, [abridged]…

5. Send voice messages Actually typing out your iMessages is so September 16—now you can speak them in a kind of instant voicemail fashion. Press and hold the record button in the bottom right corner to speak. To listen to a message, press play or hold your device up to your ear with the conversation in view.

1. Install another keyboard That's right—it's nally possible to install thirdparty keyboards on iOS once you've made the jump to 8.0. You can pick up Swype, Fleksy, or SwiftKey for free, and more alternatives will appear in the months ahead.

6. Trash and ag emails more easily There are some handy extra features added to the native Mail app in iOS 8. One of them is the ability to left swipe to bring up options for trashing and agging messages. Swiping right reveals the option to mark as unread, unchanged from iOS 7.

2. See what's using your battery Delve into the Settings app and select General then Usage. Tap on the Battery Usage entry and you can see exactly which apps are taking up all of your precious battery power.

7. Use Siri like Shazam There aren't many changes to Siri this time around but there is now Shazam-style music recognition. Activate Siri with a hold of the Home button and ask "What song is playing?" to run the query.

3. Shoot timelapse video iOS 7 had slow motion, iOS 8 has time-lapse. You'll nd the new option in your Camera app and it captures one frame of video every second.

8. Share with the family One of the biggest iOS 8 upgrades is Family Sharing. It lets you spread purchases of apps, music, movies, photos and so on between other users running iOS 8 devices. Head into the Settings app then tap iCloud and Set Up Family Sharing to get it up and running.

4. Send out your phone's last location Find My iPhone isn't new, but there is a new option in iOS—head to the iCloud section of Settings, tap Find My iPhone and enable Send Last Location. When the battery in your device gets critically low, it will ping out a location report before it dies, giving you a better chance of nding a dead device.

9. Go grey We're not sure exactly how useful this one is for most people, but tap Accessibility on the General page in Settings and there's a new Grayscale option you can activate. It's very Casablanca.

10. Set timed photos Most third-party iOS camera apps have a selftimer mode, and now Apple has added the functionality into the native app too. Tap the timer icon that appears by the on-screen shutter button to choose between a three second and a ten second delay.

11. Scan credit cards The digital money revolution continues apace: Not only does iOS 8 bring Apple Pay to the table, it also lets you scan in credit cards rather than wasting time typing out all of the details. Look for the Scan Credit Card option in Safari when you're entering payment details. 12. Change photo exposure As in iOS 7, you can tap on a part of the picture in the Camera app to change the focus point. In iOS 8, a sunlight icon appears next to the focus frame—slide this up or down with your nger to change the exposure level and the amount of light let into your shot.

ohn Godber's deliciously bitter-sweet comedy Gym And Tonic hits the stage this October. In the middle of a mid-life crisis and a stagnant marriage, where's the best place to go? Known for his innovative work in Theatre (Bouncers, Shakers), John Godber is one of the most widely performed writers in the English language. Experience

the wilds of the Antarctic For most of us, the connection with the wild but beautifully enigmatic continent of Antarctica is a distant and fanciful one, and this is where the International Antarctic Centre comes into its own.

T

he attraction provides us with breathtaking insights into the continent’s history, life forms, and the stories of human endeavour which have opened its secrets to us. Manager Nicki Dawson explains that a lot of money has recently gone into improving effects – from a more alluring and almost mystical entryway, depicting early explorers, to the creation of effects that echo real life experiences. There is always something happening. Soon you will be able to experience the sensation of a ight to the continent, in giant C17s or LC130s, sitting in tube and webbing seats and being taken through all the thrills. The Antarctic Gallery covers an impressive range of topics. You can spend a whole day there, or tailor your visit to suit your timetable, with a break perhaps in the well-stocked café, enjoying a light meal and your favourite beverage. Try to time your visit for the feeding of the little blue penguins (10.30am and 3.30pm) in a specially designed habitat. You can watch from surface or underwater level and learn more about these birds, the world’s smallest penguin. A new display outside the entrance gives you an excellent idea of the range of experiences you can enjoy inside the complex. If you are keen enough, you can experience the very real effects of an Antarctic storm. Then there is a stimulating 4D movie experience – a ride in a ship complete with ice oe collisions,

drifting snow akes and curious wildlife. As well as the Ice Voyage there is Happy Feet 4D, which is really popular with children. Don’t miss the Hagglund ride either. It's not for the fainthearted, but the course is uniquely designed to put the Hagglund through its paces in a safe environment. In fact there is something there for everyone; young or old; intent on gathering knowledge, or just happy for a wonderful outing with lots of amazing things to do and see. Trip Advisors’ reviews reect the increased success of the Centre. Visitors’ maps are available now in eight languages. With holidays on us soon, this is the perfect place for a family treat, and Canterbury residents will be in for half price (with proof of address). Those favourite characters – Pom Pom the Penguin, Husky Max, and Sammy Seal will be out daily to excite the children.

OUT & ABOUT

in Ribblesdale garden The Oxford Country Garden Fête is a boutique event that’s much anticipated by fair goers and garden lovers alike.

V

isitors not only enjoy the fun of a country fair, they also get to enjoy one of Canterbury’s prettiest country gardens, Ribblesdale. The fête, now in its third year, is the brainchild of Ribblesdale owner Denise Illingworth and local councillor Wendy Doody and is held in the gardens when they are at their oriferous best with rhododendrons, azaleas and clematis in full bloom. “We hold the fête when we do because the garden is so spectacular,” says Wendy. Small and intimate, with market stalls selling unique, quality products, delightful entertainment, and tasty food, it’s a fête like no other. “An occasion where people can relax and enjoy themselves in stunning surroundings,” say the organisers. Oxford has a reputation as a shopping destination and the fête showcases an array of local crafts. Discover beautiful fabric

cushions and bags by Oxford’s Mashelaine and clothes by local fashion designer Pauline Kirk, who is fast gaining a reputation for her unique and modern garments. Top off your outt with a chapeau from Red Rock Hats from Dareld and buy a delicious Christmas cake from Rangiora-based Fruit and Nut Delights. Dunedin’s The Rocker Man, will be there with his quality macrocarpa landscape furniture. Forged and Crafted have brought their unique garden art all the way from Roxburgh, and Ruahine Ports from Dannevirke will have award winning fruit ports for sale and tasting. And these are but a few of the tempting options for ardent fête goers. A selection of fabulous food will be available. Options include the award-winning Miss Lilly’s Boutique Cafe, the Waimari Dairy’s gourmet strawberry and ice-cream sundaes and The Spud Man, who will have hot

Music will be provided by Ashleigh and the Classics, playing hits from the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s. The fête is not only fun, it is also a fundraiser and this year the very worthy recipients are the Oxford Fire Brigade and the Oxford Search and Rescue. Lorde alt-rock heroine Home-grown music phenomenon Lorde recently announced a tour of New Zealand kicking off in October, with shows in Christchurch, Dunedin, Wellington and Auckland.

C

ertainly she has performed at Auckland’s Vector Arena and Laneway Festival, but this is the rst time she’s toured the country, and she performs here in Christchurch, at the Horncastle Arena, Jack Hinton Drive, Addington, at 8pm on 27 October. “I've been itching to do a New Zealand tour ever since the Silo Park show, which was the most amazing crowd I’ve had yet,” she says. The Grammy-winning musician has been honing the visual aspect of her show while on tour overseas, which she’ll show off in New Zealand. A press release from Frontier Touring says a Lorde gig “aunts cutting-edge lighting and technology, and boosts her show to a visual and sonically theatrical experience”. Lorde has had a mammoth year, which included multiple Grammy wins, playing at festivals like Japan's Fuji Rock, being picked to curate the next Hunger Games soundtrack, and launching her own lipstick. She also appeared in a video encouraging young New Zealanders to vote in this year’s election.

18 October 2, 2014 Metropol

But despite her rather hefty to-do list, it appears Lorde hasn't forgotten little old New Zealand. “Kiwi audiences are the best, and I'm so happy to be playing the nal shows for Pure Heroine here. It’s only right I come full circle, back to where it all started,” she says. Lorde has turned heads and deed preconceptions whilst making a permanent impression across the globe. Her rst release, The Love Club EP, became a viral phenomenon internationally, a nine week residency at the Number One spot in the American Billboard charts with Royals and multi-platinum sales in a multitude of territories. Debut album Pure Heroine added further substance to Lorde’s extraordinary story. Scaling the US Top 10 and once again amassing platinum sales all over, she stunned the world with an appearance at the 2013 Grammy awards, where she picked up Best Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance. Success continued as she was awarded Best International Female Artist at The Brits and a swag of NZ Music awards.

So where has all this come from… who exactly is Lorde? Well, Lorde is her stage name of course. She is Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor, born November 7, 1996 in Takapuna to poet Sonja Yelich and civil engineer Vic O’Connor. She was raised in Devonport. This gives her Croatian and Irish ancestry. At just ve years, she followed her friend into a drama group and discovered a love of singing and acting. Her mother encouraged her to read a range of books, which she has claimed as a lyrical inuence: “I guess my mum inuenced my lyrical style by always buying me books. She’d give me a mixture of kid and adult books too. There weren’t really any books I wasn’t allowed to read. I remember reading Feed by M.T. Anderson when I was six, and her giving me Salinger and Carver at a young age, and Janet Frame really young too.” Otherwise her early life was as normal as any happy New Zealand child’s is. “We had a big backyard and a sandpit and a lot of animals and books and paints. It was good.”

ONE CONSISTENT THING IS THAT IF I LIKE SOMETHING AND NOBODY LIKES IT, I STILL LIKE IT. IF I DON’T LIKE SOMETHING AND EVERYONE LOVES IT, I STILL HATE IT.”

She attended Belmont Intermediate School, where in 2009 she and friend Louis McDonald won the school's annual talent show. After seeing her performance at the talent show, McDonald’s father sent out recordings of Lorde covering Duffy's song Warwick Avenue and Pixie Lott's Mama Do to Scott Maclachlan at Universal Music. When Lorde was 13, A&R (Artists & Repertoire), scout Scott Maclachlan signed her to Universal Music Group (UMG) for development. UMG hired vocal coach Frances Dickinson to give her singing lessons twice a week for a year, and she began working with a succession of songwriters, but without immediate success. Maclachlan told HitQuarters (an international music industry publication and contact database): “Fundamentally I think she understood that she was going to write her own music but would ultimately need someone to help with the production side of it.” At age 13 she signed with Universal Music Group and was later paired with songwriter and record producer Joel Little. Her debut work The Love Club EP was commercially released in March 2013, and included the song Royals, which became an international crossover hit and won two Grammy Awards. Her rst studio album, Pure Heroine, was released in September 2013 to generally positive reviews and commercial success.

Lorde the person? A July 2014 interview with Peter Robinson of the UK publication The Guardian is revealing: “In some respects our time together, during which Lorde demolishes a plate of fried chicken and corn on the cob while also decimating a series of questions and observations, has all the hallmarks of an interview from hell. She is so in control of the encounter that interviewing Lorde is, at times, a little more like being interviewed by Lorde.” “I feel like that’s a base-level journalistic question,” she says at one point. “She refuses to fall for the good old ‘say nothing and see what happens’ ploy, staring blankly back at me until I eventually crack and ask another question (“I learned about that

trick quite early on,” she laughs). She makes a joke about me being old. So yes, it should be a nightmare. Instead, it’s glorious: she smiles a lot (“I just can’t do it on cue”), pokes fun at herself (she’s amused, she says, by online caricatures of her as “a grumpy, stompy witch child”) and, despite being impenetrable when she wants to be, can also be entirely straightforward. “Having the world weighing in on you from all sorts of different perspectives is intense, but the criticism I listen to most is what comes from people the same age as me; they’re the only people I care about liking my music. One consistent thing is that if I like something and nobody likes it, I still like it. If I don’t like something and everyone loves it, I still hate it.”

SPIEGELWORLD’S inaugural After unanimous rave reviews, sold out performances and standing ovations in New York and across Australia, Spiegelworld is bringing its all-new show ‘Empire’ to New Zealand this summer.

E

mpire smashes the boundaries of circus, cabaret, variety and burlesque, reinventing the genres for a 21st century audience. The show had its world premiere season in New York City during the summer of 2012, where it was the rst tented show ever seen in Times Square. The 700-seat antique spiegeltent, complete with bevelled mirrors, plus velvet-upholstered seating booths, speak-easy style bar and the most intimate stage in town, will host “the most jaw-dropping and outrageous night out you’ll experience this year.” Empire opens in Christchurch on October 21, then in Wellington from November 25, followed by Auckland from January 6, 2015. Empire is a 90-minute theatrobatic adventure performed by the “greatest international talent ever assembled in one tent”. The MCs, Oscar and Fanny, steer the show while an eccentric cast of characters help Oscar rebuild his empire; the seductive Gorilla Girls from Ukraine form perfectly balanced pyramids on top of each other; the Ethiopian foot juggler Black Flintstone throws

‘EMPIRE TAKES TRADITIONAL CIRCUS, SEXES IT UP AND AMPS IT OFF THE DIAL’ – The Daily Telegraph and impossibly catches his brother Big Mac Boy on his feet. Other performers include the French duo, Lime Green Lady and Carrot Man who beautifully and sensuously balance each other, the Half-Naked Asian Dude Wearing Pigtails from Japan is the world champion wheelmaster, rolling dangerously past the audience; Miss A in a Bubble contorts gracefully inside an aerial sphere and the 3D Grafti Guy from Canada creates amazing structures, anchored entirely on a feather. Miss Purple is the resident vocalist and is backed by the Viking of 6th Avenue, Moondog.

Empire Spiegelworld Christchurch: Horncastle Hub at Horncastle Arena, Addington From October 21 – November 2. Tuesday – Wednesday 7:30pm, Thursday – Sunday 7:30pm and 9pm. Tickets from www.ticketek.co.nz. Ticket prices from $59. or the fortunate participants in Random Acts of Kindness Day, it proved to be a day they will always remember. Early last month, eight lucky women, all with homes in Christchurch's Red Zones, were treated to a day of pampering, including having their hair done, nails manicured, light therapy, facials, and make-up done – a day of bliss.

“DO WE KEEP DOING THE SAME THINGS EACH YEAR? NO, BECAUSE WE WANT TO DO RANDOM THINGS. MY VISION IS TO HELP PEOPLE FEEL ALIVE.”

They were also whisked to the Regatta on Avon for a sumptuous lunch, The Villas coffee House for afternoon tea, a bowling alley and then ended up at the Fox and Ferret in Riccarton for an evening full of fun with all the team. They travelled to these venues in sumptuous luxury, sipping champagne, courtesy of Crown Limousines. All of this was made possible by Pay it Forward, which works on a Random Acts of Kindness policy,

This year the Pay it Forward Kiwi’s Christmas tree will be at the Christchurch Christmas light show at 650 Shands Road, Selwyn. Gifts from this go to families in need, and children can make a wish. tudying at Aoraki’s Christchurch campus, Ali is currently completing her second year of hairdressing, a Certicate in Professional Hairdressing, Level Three. “I have always wanted to be a hairdresser, since I was little - it has been my passion for many years,” says Ali. “I had grown up doing hair, cutting my Barbie doll's hair and being generally fascinated with hairdressing.” With no experience in the industry, and having to balance study with the needs of her family as well, 26 year old Ali found the perfect t at Aoraki. “I’d been looking for a hairdressing course for some time and Aoraki seemed to suit my needs,” says Ali. The Level Three full time course runs over 34 weeks. It is designed to provide students with all the skills needed to work in a commercial salon environment, including working with clients to advance their cutting, consultation, colouring and styling techniques. “This year and last year, have both been very challenging and equally rewarding,” says Ali. “I have enjoyed every minute of it and love working with the people that have come through the course so far.” For Ali the most rewarding part of her study has been an increase in her condence levels and learning how to interact with the general public on a professional level. City has growing multicultural mix The diversity of the people living in Christchurch is a fastgrowing aspect of life here of which many long-time residents may not be fully aware.

A

visit to the Christchurch Migrants Centre Trust, at 166 St Asaph Street, however, is a wonderful eye-opener to the extensive work being carried out to help a surprisingly wide range of immigrants from all parts of the world who have come here for a better life and to help this city rebuild.

AT PRESENT, ABOUT 55,000 PEOPLE WITH NON-ENGLISHSPEAKING BACKGROUNDS LIVE IN CHRISTCHURCH. The Centre's manager, Rex Gibson, explains that since the earthquakes, an ever-increasing number of people from a wide variety of countries are arriving to work at everything from engineering to rest homes, dairying and building. “The rebuild has brought us in contact with Hungarian, Czech, Indian, Indonesian, Chinese

workers and a number of Latin Americans," says Rex “We’ve had ve welcome ceremonies for Filipino workers in the past 18 months – just recently for 100. The mayor, councillors and local M.P.s usually come.” At present, about 55,000 people with nonEnglish-speaking backgrounds live in

Christchurch. New arrivals are doing their best to t into the community and the centre is keeping itself busy helping these people to integrate, by teaching them English, on three different levels, plus numerous seminars on everything from health to starting up their own businesses.

Speaking to the migrant audience, candidates explained their policies on ethnic affairs, race relations, settlement support, refugees and asylum seekers, and Canterbury earthquake recovery. The Canterbury Refugee Council supports refugees having difculties integrating, including Somalians, Ethiopians, Kurds, and Nepalese expelled from Bhutan. IN THE CITY

New backpackers in CBD YHA New Zealand has opened a new Christchurch hostel, giving a welcome boost to the recovery of the Christchurch visitor industry.

T

he 120-bed hostel is located at 36 Hereford Street and will be known as YHA Christchurch. It has undergone some short term refurbishment and opened with 50 beds in August and the remaining refurbishment and 70 beds are coming online from mid-October. Chief Executive, Mark Wells, says, “We are delighted that we now have additional presence in Christchurch, which is an important destination and gateway to the South Island. The added capacity will certainly enable YHA to better meet the demands and needs of our guests travelling through Christchurch.” Restoring capacity in Christchurch has been a priority for YHA New Zealand since it lost both its hostels during the 2011 earthquakes. In November 2012, YHA Christchurch Rolleston House reopened offering 51 beds.

This has not met the increasing demand for backpacker accommodation in the city. Mr Wells says, “Our front desk staff at YHA Rolleston House have had to turn away countless backpackers. While we know opening YHA Christchurch won’t x the problem of under-supply, we are pleased to be able to offer more dedicated YHA accommodation with the guarantee of good quality budget accommodation that our guests have come to expect.” YHA has a strong international following and is often the rst port of call for many backpackers. Being able to offer increased good quality backpacker accommodation is

POP ART TWIST For spring/summer 2014, Andrea Moore takes the Vanitas still-life painting style of 17th Century Europe and gives it a thoroughly modern Pop Art twist.

V

anitas meditated on themes of life, death and mortality through symbols from everyday life. This sombre art form has been given the Andrea Moore treatment for SS14 as archaic symbols are translated into icons of pop and lush deep orals are given a irty twist. As with every Andrea Moore collection, signature prints feature heavily. Strong, iconic graphics inspired by the Vanitas style are imbued with a pop sensibility. Stars, hearts and the beautiful red lips featured in the 'Kiss Me' print dance across classic shapes such as pencil slim pants, tted bombers and perfect party dresses. Colour is another Andrea Moore given, and this season cobalt blues pop, pure reds shine, neon yellow makes a statement and the graphic opposition of black and white creates a sharp geometric look on dresses and separates.

A waxed waterproof nish on several pieces in the collection lends an unusual and weather-friendly texture to play with, whilst there has also been a move into embroidery with rich detailed surface embellishment adding a new decadence to the Andrea Moore line. French lace once again lends the ultimate feminine edge to delicately panelled dresses, and the long line Galaxy dress is a move into occasion dressing with its elegant silk uidity. The Andrea Moore woman will be spoiled for choice this season, with a collection bursting with style and fresh new takes on classic shapes and sensibilities.

They have been witness to much of the history of Canterbury – its celebrations and its challenges. This month the iconic Ballantynes Department Store will be celebrating their 160th anniversary, and their history of style, service and enduring spirit.

“BALLANTYNES WAS THE FIRST DEPARTMENT STORE IN NEW ZEALAND WHICH HAD ITS BEGINNINGS AS A SMALL DRAPERY, OPENED BY ESTHER AND DAVID CLARKSON IN 1854. Ballantynes’ staff Ballantynes current building

“T

his is a fantastic milestone for us to celebrate. During September and October we have some wonderful glimpses into our past in store, including fashion catalogues and one of our original delivery vans. The staff and I look forward to sharing this history with our customers,” says Maria O’Halloran, Ballantynes CEO. “Whilst we stop and reect on our history, our focus is on the busy Canterbury Cup and Show Week, followed by planning a wonderful Christmas for our customers young and old. Equally we remain excited about the opportunities that the city presents to us as the rebuild accelerates.” “Ballantynes was the rst Department Store in New Zealand so there is a lot of history to look back upon,” says Maria, with a timeline of their story displayed along Colombo Street. The store had its beginnings as a small drapery, opened by Esther and David Clarkson in 1854. ‘Dunstable House’ was set up in their Cashel Street cottage and serviced the city, whose population at the time was a small 924.

The name Ballantynes was given when the retail business was bought by John Ballantyne back in 1872, with the store continuing to grow steadily. Ballantynes was the rst store in the city to become illuminated by electricity, The Tea Room opened and became a ‘must do’ activity on any visit to Christchurch, and they began their magical annual Christmas window display. With Ballantynes history so closely woven with that of Christchurch and Timaru, 160 years is a true milestone.

Return to glamour The Trelise Cooper woman has never really believed in minimalism. This season celebrates fashion's return to glamour, extravagance, spectacular shapes and to audacious adornment. Taking cues from the iconic Diana Vreeland and her inherent joie de vivre, the colleciton swaps effortlessness and restraint for lavish and inspiring – something every woman inadvertently hopes for when she walks through the Trelise Cooper doors. Textural fabrics come together with head-to-toe prints and majestic detailing. Hot house owers bloom across pastel houndstooth; Chanel-tweeds are modernised and resort wear is sprinkled with sequins. Sunshine yellow, lime and peony pink are balanced with refreshing white. Details vary from elaborate Baroque embellishment to tasselled lace kaftans and an overload of butteries. Goodbye minimal: maximalism is having its time in the sun.

A taste for the exotic Women of the world, prepare to experience a journey that spans both borders and cultures. Summer 2015 brings a melange of print on print, unexpected colour pairings and an insatiable taste for the exotic. It began in Africa, where tribal patterns and safari iconography are juxtaposed with sleek modern silhouettes. A kaleidoscope of palm fronds mingles with Club Tropicana prints and Carmen Miranda herself. Flamenco polka dots irt with Brazilian carnival stripes, and postcard prints fuse with Balinese embroidery. With an offbeat quirkiness, summer takes itself less seriously, as zebras and sparkling sh are made surprisingly wearable. Sport-luxe accents are playfully intermingled through high-tech fabrics and mesh. The best of the world has united in Cooper's Summer 15 collection.

How important are cosmetic dentures? “Very” according to Gilbert Matravers of Merivale Denture Clinic. Every day they treat patients who have emphasised the ageing process through wearing dentures with inadequate facial support.

N

atural changes occur in the gums and jaw over time. Bone beneath the gum gradually begins to change shape and shrink. Gum shrinkage gives rise to a more drawn look, increased lines and thinning lips. Elegant Victorian-style: The Almost a year after its opening, the rst-class range of boutique shops, restaurants and bars at The Tannery, in Garlands Road, Woolston, still keeps on expanding.

A

s well as the shops, the delightful Victorian-era décor of The Tannery’s main atrium, including wrought-iron lights that were made on site, is attracting large crowds, particularly during the weekend. Being located just behind the Cassels & Sons Brewing Company’s The Brewery bar and restaurant also helps. “There are customers from all over, particularly the south-east, like Sumner and Lyttelton. We also like to think we’re one of the city’s premium tourist attractions, ” says Zak Cassels, one of the co-owner sons of the Cassels’ company. “Four years ago, when we rst thought of putting shops and restaurants into this part of Woolston, people thought we were weird. This had always been thought of as a rundown area. Now, that has completely changed.” When The Tannery rst opened last

THERE ARE 35 SHOPS IN THE MAIN ATRIUM, AS WELL AS ABOUT 20 MORE IN THE EXTENDED BLOCK, BRINGING THE TOTAL TO MORE THAN 60 ON-SITE BUSINESSES, WITH MORE THAN 250 JOBS. November, only about one third of the shops were open. Now, there are 35 in the main atrium, as well as about 20 more in the extended block on the other side of the main parking area, bringing the total to more than 60 onsite businesses, with more than 250 jobs. There are plans for a 70-seat cinema, to be run by the owners of Alice Cinematheque, to open next year; with a Metropolitan lounge, function centre and art gallery on top of that, at the rear end of the atrium. The actual Cassels ’ brewery, down the far end of

the property, is now open for conducted tours. One of the most important projects to go underway soon is improvements and extensions to the main internal parking area, which is to be asphalt-sealed, creating more than 200 parking spaces by Christmas. There are also plans by Zak and his father, Alasdair, to plant owers and trees, including pohutakawas, particularly near the entrance. Before Christmas, there will be easier angleparking for 50 c ars in Cumnor Terrace, between The Tannery and the Heathcote River; and there are discussions on the possibility of a Victorian walk bridge across the river for easier access to parking space on the other side.

During a tour around The Tannery, Zak is especially excited about the relatively new shops. In the atrium, he points to Martin “Benji” Benjamin’s Encompass jean shop, Robin Mathieson’s fashion boutique, the Aramoana Flower shop, the Beauty at the Tanne ry spa and massage salon, and Mitchelli’s Café Renato at the far end. It was this passion which inspired the visionary pursuit, Kids of Canterbury, a gorgeous coffee-table photography book which also raises funds for the local children's charity Cholmondeley Children's Centre. "The book is a collection of memories about what kids do for fun and working with Cholmondeley is an absolute perfect t. Last time we raised $3000 and so this year we are aiming to increase that" The message Cholmondeley carries is profoundly simple 'Value our Children'. Based in Governors Bay, it provides a holistic 24/7 care and education environment which is directly accessible to the Canterbury community. Preparations have begun for the third collection of Kids of Canterbury and Ann will commence bookings from October 1st. The invitation is extended to all children from Canterbury under 13 years of age. The book celebrates the uniqueness of every child as the themes are constructed around the children's interests. The options are limitless and range from scenes of fantasy with pirates, fairies and mermaids, to scenes in nature and can include anything from a favourite pet to a favourite sport, it could be at the best playground or even under-water. Family sessions are available for $125 and $50 of this will go straight to the charity. The books are sold for $65 and $5 of every

hink lots of colour, lots of texture, and lots of accessories; unappable occasion and wedding wear for mothers and daughters alike. Owner Kim Taylor has an eye for style, one that attracts customers from all over Canterbury. Out-of-towners love that they can call in for a burst of shopping and generally nd what they need without venturing into the city, and city dwellers love that it’s just a short trip away. The boutique’s portfolio could be described as classy with a quirky edge. There is no limit on what comes in, rather Kim looks throughout Australasia and abroad for pieces polished with individuality. From delicately feminine to bodacious and bold, she has stocked the shop with a bountiful selection of silhouettes and styles for a number of tastes and a number of occasions. Kim only sources one size in each clothing design, meaning drops of new fashion are always coming in.

“We are constantly rening our labels and looking for things that are a bit different – things for people who don’t want to look too traditional,” she says. This season the boutique is particularly focussed on headto-toe outts for weddings, races and other social soirees. The range has been extended with an inux of accessories and labels, adorning the space as a complete wardrobe of fashions and couture, namely clothing, clutches, handbags, hats, fascinators, jewellery and more. New clothing labels to y in, Holmes & Fallon and Pink Ruby, infuse the shop with fresh, feminine looks and dress and jacket combos, while the rst drop of Studibaker’s vibrant and sophisticated collection is set to arrive in any day. For the younger scene, labels All About Eve, Blue Juice, and Jorge boast eccentric detailing, prints and textiles for a more youthful line of looks. Who handles the celebrant’s fee? The groom pays the fee, but the best man presents it to the celebrant, in a plain white envelope, either before or after the ceremony. Which side of the church is to be reserved for the bride’s family and friends? The left is for the bride, the right for the groom.

Can a house wedding be just as formal as a church wedding? Yes, but there are usually not as many attendants.

May guests be invited to the reception and not the wedding? Yes, if the ceremony is to be attended by only relatives and close friends.

Who reads telegrams or emails of congratulations at the reception?

What does the bride give the bridesmaids? A small lasting gift such as a piece of jewellery. Many times the groom is the one chosen to give the bridesmaids a small gift.

What does the groom present to his ushers? Gloves, ties, boutonnieres.

The best man. Are gifts brought to the reception? Traditionally no, but a table is often provided at the venue and gifts displayed there.

The groom.

Are nancial contributions displayed with other wedding gifts?

What does the groom present to his bride as a gift?

No, but they can be noted on a card.

How are wedding gifts displayed if a home reception is not planned? A tea or cocktail party may be held for close friends several days prior to the wedding.

Who provides corsages for the bride and mothers?

Usually a personal gift such as jewellery. Should the groom dance at the reception with other partners? Yes, with his mother, mother-in-law and the matron of honour.

Getting people up on the dance oor is what DJ Chick does best. DJ Chick, aka Therese Mitchell, and her team of DJs provide an elite professional mobile DJ service to events of all kinds across Christchurch.

KEY TO THIS IS PLAYING MUSIC THAT WILL GET PEOPLE OUT OF THEIR SEATS AND ON TO THE DANCE FLOOR, WHETHER THIS BE TOP 40 TRACKS, CLUB STYLE, OR HITS FROM ACROSS THE DECADES.

W

ith over 30 years of experience in the entertainment and mobile DJ industry, including playing in live bands, they know just what it takes to make a great party. Key to this is playing music that will get people out of their seats and on to the dance oor, whether this be Top 40 tracks, club style, or hits from across the decades. “We love playing music you can dance and sing along too,” Therese says, with retro music from the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s and old school dance tracks their sp eciality. Weddings are just one of the events that DJ Chick caters for, providing the ideal music for the ceremony, background music, reception dance, or all three, and ensuring the appropriate music is played at the right time and at the right volume. They see themselves as much more than just a DJ service, and will work with party hosts to tailor the music to individual requirements, using their skills and experience to assist with what songs will work best for specic audienc es.

DJ Chick’s services are available for birthdays, celebration parties, karaoke, school functions, corporate events or any event that requires great music, with bookings usually for around four hours.

DJ Chick, aka Therese Mitchell

Each booking includes lighting, laptop or CDs and either Therese herself, or one of her experienced and enthusiastic DJs. The company owns all the gear and has control over its quality, use and condition, meaning they can set up quietly and discreetly and will usually do so in advance. It is their passion for music and making sure every event is something special which sees DJ Chick playing their tunes four to ve nights a week, making early bookings essential. Tie the knot on trend

A

s the 2014 wedding season rapidly approaches, couples across the country are planning what will be one of the most memorable days of their lives.

And, while you can certainly expect seles, photobooths, and perhaps the hooked up hemlines of the strange new photo phase doing the rounds on Pinterest, we look at one of the more demure trends you can expect to see heading down the aisle this year – colour. Layered neutrals, like peach, cream and champagne, combined with romantic tones of navy, grey, soft blush or chocolate box purple are a huge hit right now. Natural woodsy themes are supported by this neutral colour palette. Stone, moss, and wood tones are great for rustic nature inspired weddings. The year 2014 is all about bringing back the earthy, natural, romantic tones of yesteryear.

Cook potato until tender. Do the same with parsnips in a separate saucepan. (They cook at different times.) Drain and either use ricer or food processor to purée the two together. Add the cream and 4 Tbsp of butter along with salt and vanilla powder. Reserve in a warm spot. Heat the canola oil in a medium saucepan to 180C and drop the Brussels sprout leaves in for a minute or until crispy. Drain on paper towels then season with Maldron salt. Set aside until ready to plate. Heat a large non-stick sauté pan on high heat. Add 2 Tbsp of the canola oil. Dry the scallops off very well and season with salt and pepper. Add to the sauté pan and sear until very brown on one side and then ip over and turn off the heat. Remove the scallops and set in a warm spot.

Wipe out the pan with a paper towel. Put a large spoonful of the parsnip and vanilla purée in the centre of each plate. Place 2 or 3 scallops on each plate. Wine for the discerning Tucked beside a quaint brick courtyard, just a stone’s throw from Victoria St, the recently opened Wine Bar is a delightful destination for discerning wine drinkers.

With a chilled-out atmosphere and no loud music, The Wine Bar is designed to be quiet enough for conversation and cosy enough to be boutique. The emphasis is on good wines from anywhere, rather than concentrating on a particular brand, region or country. “You can enjoy a selection of wines by the glass from $10 and wine by the bottle from $45 to $4000 for a top class vintage,” says The Wine Bar’s General Manager Jeremy Hanna. Most patrons are quite knowledgeable about the wines they like but among the white wines, pinot gris is enjoying increasing popularity and people are re-discovering chardonnay. Pinot noir is still the most popular red grape, but there is a resurgence of rosé wines which are light and fresh, especially in summer. For customers who may like other beverages, there’s a good selection of spirits and Hofbrau German beer on tap alongside three local boutique beers which are rotated to provide variety. The Wine Bar is open from 4pm until late seven days, “so you can get your x any day of the week” says Jeremy. It’s an ideal place to share a ne bottle with friends after work, treat your taste buds for pre-dinner drinks or call in to at the end of a night out for a premium drop – the most premium of which is

Idyllic riverside ‘local’ The historic Regatta on Avon, set beside the Avon River, grassed on one side and hemmed by Oxford Terrace and Durham St on the other, is perfect in its role as a café/restaurant with class and character. Certainly it has moved with the times, and has adapted itself to the shifting demographics of inner Christchurch.

t hasn’t been easy,” says co-owner Kristin McLay, “but over the past few months business has trebled.” This means the changes put in place earlier in the year are working, and the customer base has widened. Gone are the fences screening the attractive restaurant, and it now nds itself next to the Re-Start Mall. “We are getting regulars now, and these folk treat us as a local. Many are repeat customers from businesses in the area. We are getting some great reviews, particularly in Trip Advisor. “We are also getting larger bookings, and we are recommending anybody coming with a group to book ahead to avoid being

Although the bar has been extended and modernised, there has been a subtle shift to more of a ‘restaurant’ approach. The menu has gradually grown, remains affordable and reects positive comments by diners. Brunch has traditional favourites such as a big breakfast, and Eggs Benedict, as well as rib eye steak, pan fried chicken breast, crumbed stuffed mushrooms and calamari. A $12 lunch menu features roast of the day, pasta, spanakopita, pork and apple slaw burger, along with soup, chicken and sh dishes. The atmosphere is friendly and diverse in the sense that you can have a quiet dinner for two, or a staff function, family gettogether; or book it for an idyllic and romantic wedding venue. Whatever the occasion Regatta on Avon has the ability to create a memorable function. Go there soon. You will be pleasantly surprised. Like Christchurch it may have changed a little, but it is still a wonderfully worthwhile destination.

Local landmark restored, It is 130 years since John Miln built his homestead in Halswell, but the local landmark has now been stunningly transformed into a neighbourhood café, bar and venue. Reinvented, restored and resplendently refurbished, the quirkily named “white house black.” enjoyed 2000 “likes” on Facebook even before its mid September opening!

O

wners Chris Gear and Melanie Schroeder, whose ideas for the café were constantly evolving during the long development process, bought the rundown property in late 2012. “Having grown up in the area we wanted to create the sort of café we like ourselves and hope that people will enjoy the atmosphere and surroundings both within the house and outside,” says Chris. After a lifetime as a white house, the change

to black with a startling white trim is both dramatic and appealing. Set well back from the road, the grounds retain many mature trees, while new plantings enhance the symmetry of the house and its portico entrance. Bi-fold doors and windows open to sundrenched terraces where large sofas and re tables beg you to wine, recline or dine. “With the big cantilevered umbrellas we can use the outdoors all day and into the evening, but we can also retreat inside if it becomes cooler or rains.” Inside is a mesmerising blend of restoration and modern imagination. Where possible the original features of the house have been retained or recycled; bricks from old chimneys have become feature walls, heart matai loadbearers from the oors have re-appeared as glossy tables and bar counters, while the original staircase beneath an exquisite leadlight window leads to the upstairs space. “We also opened up a labyrinth of rooms into bright exible spaces to suit a variety of groups and purposes,” explains Chris. Consequently you can sit at a counter, around a large table or in a cosy booth and there are also plans to provide picnic packs in summer so that customers can enjoy an informal dining experience in the gardens. Polished concrete oors and metal-framed tables lend a modern industrial twist to the

Vintage typewriters decorate the brick walls of the bar, reecting the type set design of the in-house menus, a massive clock that once graced a train station in Paris looks entirely at home and authentic riddling racks from French champagne houses provide rustic authenticity behind the gleaming bar. White House Black's kitchen is a steel and black tiled wonderland also on view to patrons.

Open throughout the day, different menus encompass breakfast, lunch and dinner selections. “The food is eclectic because we wanted to make eating a social occasion so there are all day tapas that can be ordered to share for a group or as an entrée or side dish with a main course of meat or sh. Breakfast and lunch menus will also run concurrently.” The wine list features predominantly New Zealand wines and a variety of boutique beers including Three Boys, Raindogs, Epic and

Zephyr. “We are not locked into any beverage contracts so we can swap the brands regularly,” says Chris. He has also designed a White House Black blend of coffee with Vivace, but also envisages other guest coffees featuring from time to time. The second oor of the old house features another recycled matai bar graced with a restored, completely genuine, 1956 Italian espresso machine. Chromed, polished and rehomed, it is the Ferrari of coffee machines and,

as the only one in New Zealand, is a unique café experience not to be missed. Upstairs can be congured for up to 100 guests for a wedding or dinner, while the adjoining step-down lounge (formerly the billiards room) has a magnicent sound system for dancing up a storm. Spring makeover at home A

home is a private place where we can relax. We hope our homes are comfortable, welcoming and tranquil. This is why most of us are interested in home improvement, and there’s no better time to take a look at our homes than in spring. Revamp your home with some cleaning and reorganising that will give your home a signicant facelift for the warmer months to come… • Clean out the clutter by getting rid of the rubbish accumulated over the last few months in your interior, garden or outdoor area. Invest in some fresh new container plants and let some sunshine and fresh air come into the rooms. • Clean up your doorsteps. Replace your old worn out mats. Go green with some fresh plants, and shrubs. Remove any old, unhealthy or dusty plants. • Spring is the season of colour – especially lemon yellow, mandarin orange, aqua blues, aqua tinctured, blushing pink, bottle green, dark purple, smoky grey, and light golden brown. Uplift the look of the interiors of your house by placing some colourful owers and plants at specic locations. • Take care of your oor and clean or replace your rugs. Why not opt for a bright, bold rug which will complement and lift the colours of your furniture, wood panels, curtains and other accessories. It will help you create a fresh ambience. • Check your accessories and wall decor. Look around your room. See if there is any need of revamping or refurbishing. If yes, then opt for some innovative wallpapers and clever paintings. However, you need to maintain a balance. Do not overcrowd the rooms with paintings or photographs. Instead introduce some changes in the accessories to give your home a different look.

Aesthetic displays of bold, dainty & aromatic Last October Nicola Stewart and Stuart Lowe became the proud new owners of Flowers on Cashmere. They’ve since spent time updating the boutique with subtle touches of their style and are now in full spring mode, welcoming new spring product and dressing spring weddings.

F

lowers on Cashmere bring a modernised approach to oristry. As a ‘oral design studio’ there is no job too great or small; they produce all kinds of oral arrangements and as such their product range is vast and unparalleled. The spacious and naturally lit wooden villa is decorated with an abundance of fresh oral arrangements and giftware, like vases and NZ made lotions, and even boasts a quiet consultation lounge and peaceful outdoor garden to explore. With more owers in bloom than at any other time of year, spring has seen an inux of seasonal colours and orals. A colour palette of lemons, apricots and pinks dresses the scene in aesthetic bursts of bold and dainty with the help of popular owers like double-tulips and freesias.

“Flowers work visually and aromatically to create mood and personality within settings and also as gifts,” says Nicola. “We help with any and every request.” Right now their focus is on wedding season. They’ve arranged bridal and wedding packages positioned at competitive price points that include one-on-one consultations to achieve a tailored and individualised result.

Spring is a splendid time for dressing weddings as it sees an almost unlimited selection of fresh stock for brides and grooms to choose between. A cinematic EXPERIENCE Watching television in a time of smartphones and tablets is all about the big picture. When you allow yourself to get comfortable at home in front of your television the visual experience better be extraordinary and the sound nothing short of immaculate.

T

his is why Bang & Olufsen has launched an impressive 85-inch version of the acclaimed BeoVision Avant 55 that was introduced earlier this year. The new agship television displays Ultra High-Denition (4K) picture and the renowned Bang & Olufsen sound in one elegantly designed and beautifully crafted TV. “BeoVision Avant 85 is a true state-of-the-art product at a competitive price for a television of this size and level of innovation. At Bang & Olufsen we are proud of introducing this grand television to a market that is demanding products offering extraordinary home experiences,” explains Tue Mantoni, the CEO of Bang & Olufsen. The designers at Bang & Olufsen have aimed at reducing the physical presence of BeoVision Avant 85 when not in use. By offering both a motorised stand and a wall bracket option, you will be able to let this TV stand out or blend into your interior. Once you switch it on it shows off its full potential through a carefully choreographed unfolding. Touch one button on BeoRemote One, and it nds your favourite position, your favourite channel, your favourite sound setting. When you switch it off, it folds back the speakers, and returns to its discrete resting place close up against the wall. The 85-inch version features cutting-edge direct type LED with 2D local backlight dimming. The result is in an even more rened picture quality. With eight integrated driver units and a surround sound module it provides sound performance unlike any other TV. The integrated 3-channel speaker solution with both centre channel and stereo at the same time, means you will get exceptionally good stereo performance with optimised speech reproduction and sufcient bass to satisfy your wishes when watching the most

extreme sports or action footage with crystal sharp, dynamic precision. However, if you wish to extend the sound solution up to a full 7.1 surround solution this is possible, and even wirelessly, as the TV incorporates the Immaculate Wireless Sound concept. Professional installation ensures that all relevant non-Bang & Olufsen equipment such as game consoles, hard disk recorders, Apple TV etc. can be handled by the Bang & Olufsen remote control. BeoVision Avant 85 will be in store this month, on sale exclusively at Bang & Olufsen stores. Recommended price from NZ$34,045 for BeoVision Avant 85 including BeoRemote One. Placement options on either wall or oor starting from NZ$ 2295.

Discover a

unique French vintage boutique There are some places you can't take at face value; you just know there's something more. The Old Meadery is one of those places.

N

estled comfortably on the outskirts of Rangiora, The Old Meadery isn't a regular store, it's a store with a story. With the French vintage chic boutique celebrating one year in business, this story is a good one. Tucked away down a long driveway at 273 Plaskett Road Fernside, you will rst be greeted by one of two of the lovely sales assistants. They're a little on the furry side, but the two golden retrievers are ever so welcoming. There's almost too much beauty to take in all at once. The stunning character building which was formerly Havill's meadery is matched by the striking grounds which are bursting with the excitement of spring. And this is all before you've even stepped foot inside the store. Anette and Graeme Drewery purchased the property in 2013, knowing immediately it would be the perfect blank canvas to create something truly unique. They've certainly made their mark on the property and a stunning mark at that. With several adventurous projects under their business belts already, including establishing the unique wedding venue the Wineshed in Tai Tapu and just recently selling the striking interiors store on the wharf in Mapua which housed pieces from Morocco, France and Fiji, there was no doubting the couple would create something special. They decided it was the perfect setting for a chic boutique combining a love of French antiques and marrying them together with the fabulous Bianca Lorenne linens, French soaps and stunning one-off Italian linens and other homewares. But The Old Meadery isn't just about statement pieces for the home,

WHEN YOU'RE HEADING OUT TO THE OLD MEADERY, YOU MAY THINK YOU ARE HEADING TO A STUNNING FRENCH VINTAGE CHIC BOUTIQUE, BUT YOU'RE ACTUALLY HEADING TO A LITTLE SLICE OF HEAVEN.

with a stunning range of unique, one-off clothing, including gorgeous Italian knitwear and hats from Madagascar – there are pieces that work perfectly for those occasions where you want impact. When you're heading out to The Old Meadery, you may think you are heading to a stunning French vintage chic boutique, but you're actually heading to a little slice of heaven. “We feel extremely lucky to have found the Meadery, in fact the Meadery found us…. But that is a whole other story,” Annette laughs. The Old Meadery isn't just a store, it's a destination. Find The Old Meadery on Facebook for a sneak peek or phone (03) 313 1366.

f course, having a vast plot of land with seemingly endless possibilities for landscaping and gardening is exciting and desirable; however, this is not a reality for many homeowners. It is highly likely that you will have a limited amount of space to work with. This often deters people from doing something really interesting, but that does not need to be the case. With the right initiative, an outdoor space of any shape or size can be turned into something special. The following tips will help you get the most out of your space and do more with less.

Plan extensively and carefully Any landscaping project requires detailed planning, and if you have a smaller space to work with, this need for preparation is even greater. Take the time to consider all of the ner points and minor details so that you can move forward with direction and condence.

A FOUNTAIN CREATES SOOTHING SOUNDS, AND OUTDOOR LIGHTING CAN ADD A LOT OF EFFECT.

Create a focal point Doing so will command attention, eliminate any look of clutter, and add a sense of tidiness. A focal point could be anything from a water feature to an interesting tree to a piece of art, as long as it draws attention without being too overwhelming. It should ideally be places where view angles intersect.

Container gardening can provide height variation, colour, and a place for some plants in areas other than the garden. Maintain some consistency throughout the landscape, such as a constant colour for pots of different sizes in order to tie the garden together.

Keep it simple and clean

Work with light, motion, and sound to add to the experience and make your landscape seem larger. For example, a fountain creates soothing sounds, and outdoor lighting can add a lot of effect.

Use containers

Appeal to all of the senses

Don't try to do too much or incorporate every concept you can think of. Add the necessary hardscape and build accents and ourishes from there. Also, as a general rule of thumb, straight lines usually take up less space than curves. Long, straight lines especially can make a space look bigger. Too many colours and textures can be overwhelming. Aim for simple yet sophisticated.

hether you have small spaces or acres of walls waiting to be adorned, there are smart and creative ways to display the pictures that are most meaningful to you. Some displays work best on a white wall, others need a bolder coloured back-drop, some displays require symmetry and uniformity while others are more eye catching with an asymmetrical arrangement because they are eclectic. Framing should be an integral part of the picture process because your choice can make or break the display. Frames need not be expensive, but they should complement the artwork or photo in style, colour, size and materials. If your home is contemporary, antique frames can look out of place unless you are supremely careful with the placement. Similarly ultra modern framing can be inappropriate in a heritage property where room scale and lighting is quite different to that of more recent house designs. Custom made frames are naturally more expensive than those that are ready made but you may need them to do justice to bone de art works or pictures of larger or non uniform size. Inexpensive frames need not look cheap, especially if you stick to single colour frames. Simple frames and matt nish enhances any

A staircase gallery may need an even line of similar sized pictures, while an entranceway may call for a vertical cluster. A themed wall can be inspired by the style, location or interests of the collector; beach themed items at the bach, garden prints in a lounge or conservatory, favourite coloured items in a child’s bedroom, or a much admired piece from a particular era or artist. If cost is an issue, you can nd affordable calendar prints, travel posters, greeting cards or take your own scenic photos to frame or

have made into a canvas print. Digital technology has revolutionised photography and we now take hundreds of pictures on our digital cameras, iPads and mobile phones, then never print them or rarely look at them again! So organise them into categories and load them onto a digital picture frame you can view everyday as it scrolls through your snapshots.

If you haven’t got much suitable wall space reduce the number of items on display and ring the changes from time to time or make use of panelled doors or alcoves to show your art and photos. There are also various picture display systems that suit small venues; make a pin board behind a bed or above a desk, choose some photos to hang on a magnetic wire or peg onto a string of bunting in a study or bedroom, create a family photo table or a picture shelf, make an instagram collage of your latest travels, or simply display a single signature image as the focal point of your home. So let loose the artist in you and allow your photos, features, frames and faces give your home some serious soul on or off the wall.

hairs come in many different shapes and sizes, with a variety of styles and levels of comfort. If you're redecorating your home, or looking for better seating in your home, check out our guide to the different kinds of chairs available on the market:

Chair and a half This nifty seat is excellent for smaller lounges or bedrooms. It looks similar to an armchair, but is usually the size of an armchair and a half. They can be found in any style, and are extremely versatile in a number of settings

Chaise longue You may have seen a beautiful classic chaise longue, which is basically a long chair, whereby you can stretch your legs out without having to use an ottoman or foot stool. It’s considered a ‘lounging chair’ and they come in various sizes and designs, with some holding onto their French inuence with regards to their style and nishes. They make excellent statement pieces for your home.

DON'T BE AFRAID TO PURCHASE A STATEMENT CHAIR ON ITS OWN THAT WILL SIT AS AN ATTRACTIVE PIECE IN YOUR HOME.

Club chair

Dining room chairs

Club chairs are similar to armchairs except they are usually slimmer and simpler. Generally upholstered in leather, club chairs were named as such after their rise to fame in Gentlemen's Clubs in 19th Century England. A good, attractive club chair is a lovely seating piece in a reception room, study or empty corner of most rooms.

There are so many different types of dining room chairs that the choice can be overwhelming! Firstly, focus on the type of table you have. What colour is it, what type of material is it made of? A good, solid wooden table will go well with suede or leather wooden chairs. Depending on your taste, you can purchase French vintage dining room chairs, chrome ones or even plastic bucket-seat type chairs. Don't be afraid to purchase a statement chair on its own that will sit as an attractive piece in your home. Mixing and matching different styles can work well too, as can contrasting colours and different materials.

Bar stools Armchair An armchair is simply a single-seater couch, generally living up to its name by having a comfortable back and armrests. A good armchair works well with most lounge suites, but can also look good in a study, perfect for settling into with a good book.

Bar stools are a must-have if you have a breakfast bar. These chairs are much taller than regular chairs, although they are adjustable depending on the height of the counter they will be seated at. Available in stainless steel and leather, and sometimes wood, bar stools offer a relaxed seating environment for quick meals and social gatherings.

Although the local construction rm is in a transitory phase, moving from the earthquake repairs and renovations which have formed the basis of the workload for the past four years, to a wide range of private residential and commercial building work, owner Brad Richards has doubled his team to ensure everybody’s needs can be met. Richards Building can meet all your building requirements from new builds, renovations, home additions, light commercial and t outs, and the company can repair any earthquake damage your home has sustained. “There are a lot more people out there who are looking to carry out private construction work on their homes and businesses,” Christchurch local Brad says. “So we wanted to ensure we had the staff to meet that demand while still looking after our regular client base.” Health and safety has been increasingly pushed into the spotlight, with the increased workload putting unprecedented pressures on the industry and, again, Richards Building has risen to the challenge. “We’ve brought OHS Consultants on board to externally manage our site safety and ensure our health and safety practices are at a high standard on every site,” Brad says. These credentials, in conjunction with the 10-year guarantee provided through Homerst Builders, certainly speak volumes with regard to the business’ operational integrity. But the

hen Tony Treleaven was looking for a builder, it wasn't a decision he took lightly. His neighbouring properties at numbers 6 and 8 Circuit Street Merivale had previously housed historic wedding venue Elizabeth House, built in 1914 and demolished after our city's seismic events rendered it irreparable. Tony had purchased the rundown property several years prior to the earthquake, pumping significant resources into renovating and developing the wedding venue business, before it was torn away in just 30 seconds. Tony initially planned to develop a new wedding venue on the site, but due to the residential zoning, he felt the space would be better suited to two houses – one for his family and one to sell. O'Neil Architecture designed these two striking homes and the next very important decision was who was going to build them. Being high-end houses it was important to

Pitfalls of home design W

hen you buy a house and land package, you have an opportunity to build your home according to your preferences. Budget constraints aside, you'll enjoy much more design exibility than would be the case if you purchased a display home. If you desire large bedrooms, you can have them. If you prefer a large kitchen and living room, that too is possible. Having said that, the added exibility introduces a number of potential pitfalls. Mistakes made during the design phase can set the stage for big problems down the road. Following, we'll discuss ve common blunders people make when they purchase a house and land package. Our goal is to help you avoid making the same mistakes, thereby saving you time, money, and frustration.

Ignoring how your family will use the home The design of your house should take into account how your family will use it. For example, if you have kids, you might want to build a playroom. The location of the playroom should make it easy for you and your spouse to supervise them. Consider how your family will use the kitchen and living room. If you enjoy cooking, the accompanying noise might make it difcult for your family to watch lms, hold a conversation, and relax.

Failing to properly plan open spaces Open spaces are popular among homeowners. Unfortunately, those who buy house and land packages often fail to properly plan them. For example, they combine hardwood oors and high ceilings, a combination that increases the level of noise in the room.Such problems are usually easy to avoid. For example, adding insulation to the walls and installing carpet will dampen noise, ensuring that it stays at an acceptable level. If you prefer hard oors, you can also use drapes, cushioned chairs, and other furnishings to create a dampening effect.

ADDING INSULATION TO THE WALLS AND INSTALLING CARPET WILL DAMPEN NOISE, ENSURING THAT IT STAYS AT AN ACCEPTABLE LEVEL.

KIT & CABOODLE ANTIQUES AND DISTINCTIVE INTERIORS

Neglecting to consider the sun's path Many homeowners fail to think about how the sun's trajectory throughout the year will affect the temperature in their homes. They create their houses without considering the orientation of their windows. As a result, their homes heat up during the summer and remain chilly during the winter. The ideal orientation is for the windows to face north (that usually means the house will sit on an east-west axis). Northfacing windows will allow more sunlight and warmth to enter living spaces during the winter. Sunlight can be controlled by window treatments during the summer. The result is that your home will be more comfortable to live in throughout the year.

KEEP IN MIND THAT MOST PROJECTS GO SLIGHTLY OVER BUDGET. BUILD A SMALL BUFFER INTO YOUR COST ESTIMATIONS SO YOU CAN ABSORB THE OVERAGE.

Overestimating the amount of space available When you rst start designing your house, you may nd yourself overestimating the amount of space you have at your disposal. That's common, even for individuals who have purchased a house and land package before. The problem is, unless you revise your numbers, your initial design will be unviable. You'll lack sufcient room. Before having the builder start construction, make sure the dimensions of the rooms, hallways, and entryways are feasible. Be prepared to make compromises. Buying a house and land package is an exciting experience that gives you an opportunity to design your home the way you envision it. But keep the common pitfalls listed above in mind during the design stage. Doing so will help to ensure that you and your family are ecstatic about your new home for years to come.

Underestimating the cost to build the home This is one of the most common mistakes homeowners make when designing their houses. They spend a considerable amount of money on plans, consulting reports, and various experts, and then discover that they lack the funds to move forward with the project. They fail to accurately gauge its cost. The project comes to a grinding halt at the design stage until new, more affordable plans can be drawn up. It's important to periodically consult the builder to ensure that the cost of your new home design doesn't exceed your budget. Keep in mind that most projects go slightly over budget. Build a small buffer into your cost estimations so you can absorb the overage.

THE OWNER'S BEDROOM HISTORY This part of a house in America usually includes a huge bathroom and a walk-in closet for the mistress and/or the man of the house. The American real estate industry began to embrace this element about 25 or so years ago. This is also called the master suite (forgive the inclusion of the word master in there yet again) which sprung up during the ‘80s.

What’s in a name:

American bedrooms

A

ccording to interior designer Nancy Dewitt there has been an ongoing debate over the use of the term ‘master bedroom’ in America. She says there are those who believe that the use of the term master bedroom is indicative of a slave somewhere else inside the house. “This reeks of racial discrimination,” she says. “So, in order to be politically correct, you have to use the term ‘owner's bedroom’ now in America. I asked her to tell me more about the history of bedrooms in that part of the world…

For a lot of people, 18th and 19th century homes in America were very utilitarian. Only the rich could afford numerous bedrooms as well as sitting rooms. Though this was the case, most lower to middle class Americans preferred to sleep all together in one room more so during the coldest winter seasons. Of course, this was because they weren't as lucky as their rich counterparts with regard to the number of rooms and furnaces installed. OWNER'S BEDROOM DESIGN ELEMENTS TODAY These days many owners’ bedrooms are large and luxurious. Colour choice for relaxation is important and beds are super-sized and comfortable. Other bedroom furniture includes bedside tables, a dresser and often a loveseat or other sitting area furniture. Lighting is also an important element from practical reading light to dimmed romantic lighting and block out blinds or drapes to provide darkness for sleep and full sunlight in the morning.
